Myspace Music - First Thoughts

I have my normal routine of finding a playlist, or stream to listen to for the day, and last night Myspace Music launched so I thought I would give it a try. I opened music.myspace.com, and decided to give it a try…

If you don’t know anything about Myspace Music, then let me give you the 30 second pitch. Myspace Music is a joint venture between NewsCorp’s Myspace and all 4 major record labels. It allows consumers to stream just about all the music the 4 labels have in their libraries. You can purchase DRM free (MP3) music directly from Amazon who is in partnership with Myspace Music.

After about 3 hours of using the service, I have to say that I am *mildly* impressed. It seems I can stream an entire CD, only 3 songs at a time? Once I have played 3 songs, I am forced to go back to the tab and click the play button again. Not cool, and a huge productivity block.

Myspace Music is NOT a destination site, it is Myspace’s normal artist profiles with a new Flash player. That is Myspace Music. A Flash player with a drop down for mroe albums, a ringtones button, buy now (Amazon) button, and playlist feature.

In the past people have found ways to take the Myspace music player and use it across the internet… I will be interesting to see if this happens again, and if it does you can imagine the 4 labels will on Myspace pretty quick to patch the player.

Does this mean the end for Last.fm, Pandora, and Rhapsody?  Possibly, if the 4 labels see some huge traction and revenue on Myspace, it would just make sense for them to pull their licensing contracts with competitors as they have an ownership stake with Myspace now. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out in the next 6 months.
